No-Mess Color Mixing Activity: "Color Smushing"

    • Facebook

An easy, mess-free sensory activity for preschoolers or toddlers that also teaches about the science of color mixing is what I like to call "Color Smushing."

Two open zip-top plastic bags full of paint, 1 orange and 1 green, plus paint brush laying on bag with the green paint.

This color mixing activity takes very little preparation, and the end result can be used in a variety of art extension activities. It's an excellent no-mess activity for preschool classrooms, but can just as easy done at home.

    Materials

    • Zip-top style bags
    • Red, blue and yellow tempera paint. I prefer to use washable paint.
    • Paint brush and paper (for optional painting afterwards)
    • Enthusiastic kids! (essential)

    Instructions

In a zip-top plastic bag squirt two different primary colors of paint. For example, red and yellow, yellow and blue, or red and blue. Tightly zip the bag closed. You can tape it shut if you really don't want your child to open it. Hand the bag over to your child and watch them smush the colors together, creating a new color.

    No mess!

    Extension Activity

When your child is finished smushing, open the bag up and paint! This is such a great way to learn about color and a fun alternative to mixing colors on paper with a brush. It's a sensory activity that extends into art!
